Architectural Assistant

Architectural Assistant / Student Opportunity

Wolverhampton / Remote | Flexible | Self-Employed

Affordable Architectural is looking for someone to join us during a busy period of growth.

We are currently looking for an architecture or architectural technology student, graduate, or someone with a genuine interest in residential design who would like to work with Affordable Architectural on a flexible, self-employed basis.

You do not need to be professionally qualified and you do not need previous professional experience to apply.

We are far more interested in finding someone who is motivated, reliable, willing to learn and genuinely interested in developing within the business.

This opportunity will initially begin on a trial basis to help manage our current workload. However, for the right person, there is genuine potential for the role to develop into a much larger and longer-term position within Affordable Architectural.

About the Role

The role will primarily support the day-to-day delivery of residential architectural projects.

Depending on your experience and ability, your work may include:

  • Producing and amending drawings using AutoCAD

  • Preparing planning drawings and drawing sheets

  • Assisting with residential planning applications

  • Working on extensions, loft conversions, garage conversions, HMOs and other residential projects

  • Assisting with measured surveys and site information

  • Preparing project documents and supporting information

  • Communicating professionally with clients

  • Helping with project administration and organisation

  • Making amendments following client or planning feedback

  • Assisting with the coordination of projects as your experience develops

You will not be expected to know everything immediately.

Training, guidance and feedback will be provided, with responsibility increasing as your skills, confidence and understanding develop.

Who We’re Looking For

We are looking for someone who is:

  • Confident using AutoCAD, or actively developing their AutoCAD skills

  • Interested in residential architecture, property or development

  • Professional and comfortable communicating with clients

  • Proactive and willing to take initiative

  • Organised and able to manage their own workload

  • Reliable and able to meet agreed deadlines

  • Willing to learn and take on increasing responsibility

  • Comfortable asking questions when unsure

  • Interested in developing beyond basic drafting work

Good communication and attitude are extremely important.

We are looking for someone who wants to understand how projects work from initial enquiry through to planning submission and completion, rather than simply being given drawings to produce.

Qualifications & Experience

Professional experience is not essential.

You do not need to be a qualified architect, architectural technologist or surveyor.

This opportunity could be suitable for:

  • Architecture students

  • Architectural Technology students

  • Construction or Built Environment students

  • Recent graduates

  • College or university students developing CAD skills

  • Someone with residential drawing experience but no formal qualification

  • Someone looking to gain practical experience alongside their studies

Experience with planning applications, measured surveys, residential projects, administration or client communication would be beneficial, although none of these are essential.

Student work, university projects, college work and personal CAD projects are all welcome as examples of your ability.

Location & Working Arrangements

Affordable Architectural is based near Wolverhampton in the West Midlands.

A significant amount of the role can be completed remotely.

However, applicants must be able to attend an interview in Wolverhampton or the surrounding area.

As the role develops, there may also be occasional site visits, measured surveys or meetings within the West Midlands.

Being able to drive, learning to drive, or being willing and able to travel would therefore be advantageous.

Working hours can be flexible and this opportunity may be suitable alongside university or other commitments, depending on availability and workload.

What You’ll Gain

This role is designed to offer more than occasional drafting work.

You will have the opportunity to gain practical experience across real residential projects and develop an understanding of how a growing architectural business operates.

Depending on your progression, you may gain experience in:

  • Residential architectural design

  • Planning policy and applications

  • Client communication

  • Measured surveys

  • Project coordination

  • Business administration

  • Quoting and early-stage enquiries

  • Managing amendments and deadlines

  • Working with external consultants

  • Taking ownership of projects

For someone early in their career, the aim is to provide exposure to the practical side of architecture and project delivery that is often difficult to gain through education alone.

Long-Term Progression

The long-term aim is to find someone who can become a key part of Affordable Architectural.

As your experience develops, there may be opportunities to:

  • Take ownership of residential projects

  • Manage client communication

  • Coordinate planning applications

  • Carry out measured surveys

  • Assist with project management

  • Help train future team members

  • Take on greater responsibility within the business

  • Progress into a senior position

For someone who demonstrates the right level of commitment, ability and initiative, there could eventually be opportunities for senior management responsibility and potentially a future partnership within Affordable Architectural.

There is no automatic guarantee of progression or partnership, but we want to create genuine opportunities for people who prove themselves and contribute meaningfully to the growth of the business.

About Affordable Architectural

Affordable Architectural provides residential architectural design and planning services to homeowners, landlords and property professionals.

Our work includes extensions, loft conversions, garage conversions, HMOs, planning applications, property alterations and other residential projects.

We are continuing to grow and develop our systems, services and team.

The aim is to build a modern architectural business that combines strong design, clear communication, practical project delivery and accessible services for clients.

This role would suit someone who likes the idea of joining during an early stage of growth and helping shape how the business develops.
